Most capitals in Europe have that majestic look, and Madrid is, by no means, an exception. Situated right in the heart of the Iberian continent it’s surrounded by green hills, forests and nice villages. The winter can be quite cold according to Spanish measures and the summer heat, almost unbearable, but out of the temperature peaks, it’s a must see city. Madrid is the perfect destination for art & history lovers. Besides from the many historic monuments you can find all over the city, the museums are rated amoung the best in the world.
Several round-abouts have huge fountains separating the avenues, and one of the most famous is Cibeles, where Real Madrid supporters come to celebrate when their team wins. The Neptune fountain is where the other big team, Atletico de Madrid, do their celebration. But did you know that the oldest fountain in Madrid, is actually underground? It’s in the Opera Metro station and was discovered only a few decades back.
Activities
Penny for Ania’s thoughts on the city:
Madrid is big, Madrid is fancy, Madrid is Royal. These are the 3 words for me which best describe the capital of Spain, and I must say I do enjoy experiencing them while in town. The main street, Gran Via, was built as a resemblance to Broadway and is filled with theaters, hotels, best shops and restaurants. It is the King´s city!
Penny for Elin’s thoughts on the city:
I simply love to get lost in Madrid. Even though I have lived and studied here, I still get lost on purpose sometimes. That’s when I bump into the places that later become my favorite spots in the city. I would, without a shred of doubt, say that Madrid is the best destination for cultural seekers. The history, although cruel sometimes, is hidden in every corner of the city. The museums are among the most recommended in the world, boosting with priceless masterpieces from artists from all over the world. The big avenues and parks are great for taking a bicycle ride and you can end up on one of the many plazas for some tapas and refreshments. It’s possible to take interesting day-trips out of the city, to El Escorial, Toledo, Salamanca or Segovia. The hotel offer is extensive and can be found in all price ranges.
